Lady Tigers sweep Maplewoods

Continuing to swing the bats well early in the season, the No. 2-ranked Cowley College softball team swept a doubleheader against Maplewoods Community College Thursday in Arkansas City.
Cowley run-ruled the Lady Monarchs 12-4 in six innings in game one, before needing only five innings to win game two by a score of 9-1. The victories improve the Lady Tigers' record to 6-1 on the season.

Cowley is averaging more than nine runs per game in its six wins.
In game one, Cowley trailed 4-2 before rallying to score 10 unanswered runs.
With the score tied 4-4, Cowley benefited from five straight walks to start the bottom of the fourth inning and scored three times in the inning to lead 7-4.
Freshman Shannon Driggers came through with a two-run single, while sophomore Jordan Haya crushed a two-run double in a five-run fifth inning, which saw Cowley's lead grow to 11-4.
The game ended when Caitlyn Cosme led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came around to score on a single by freshman Hope McLeod.
Sophomore pitcher Jessica Seay (2-0) allowed four runs in the first three innings before retiring seven of the final eight batters she faced. Freshman Taya Haney came on in relief of Seay and pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
Freshman outfielder Morgan Swisher continued her torrid start to the season as she finished with two of Cowley's nine hits in the victory. Swisher also stole three bases.
In game two, Swisher went 3-for-3 with three more stolen bases. Swisher is batting an astounding .682 with 10 stolen bases through the first seven games of the season.
"She puts so much pressure on the defense because of her speed and is a heck of an offensive weapon for us," Cowley head coach Ed Hargrove said.
Sophomore Brooke Benge, the surprise of the early season, tossed four no-hit innings in the second game before giving way to Taya Haney in the fifth. Benge has yet to allow a run in 14 1/3 innings pitched as she improved her record to 3-0 on the season.
"It was good to see Brooke continue her scoreless streak," Hargrove said.
Maplewoods' lone run was charged to Haney in the fifth inning.
The Lady Tigers blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring seven runs on eight hits.
Cowley finished with 14 hits in the nightcap. Along with Swisher's big game, Jordan Haya, Katie Holmes, and Rondeci Oliver added two hits a piece.
The Lady Tiger softball team will continue its six-game home stand by opening conference play with a doubleheader against Cloud County Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Lady Thunderbirds split a doubleheader against Cowley last year in Concordia.
"I will remind the sophomores of the game we lost to them and how we cannot take them for granted," Hargrove said. "I am glad to start conference play at home and hope we get started on the right foot."
