Cowley sweeps Highland

Tiger baseball team runs wild in sweep of Highland
With snow in Highland forcing the move of Friday's doubleheader to Arkansas City, the Cowley College baseball team continued its solid play by winning both games by scores of 12-5 and 5-1.

Designated as the visiting team on the scoreboard, the Tigers grabbed control of the first game by scoring seven times in the first three innings. Cowley had six players register multi-hit games as they easily won the opener 12-5.
Batting at the top of the Tigers' lineup, A.J. Shaw and Butch Rea each went 3-for-5 with a stolen base and a run batted in. Bobby Bassler also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three stolen bases, while Ryan McBroom went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a pair of steals.
All totaled, Cowley stole 10 bases in the victory.
Sophomore Levi Skinner improved his record to 3-0 by allowing only three hits and one earned run in five innings pitched. Skinner struck out five and walked one. Sophomore Conner Murray pitched the final two innings for the Tigers and allowed three runs.
Skyler Barnes took the loss for the Scotties, allowing seven hits and seven runs in 2 1/3 innings.
In game two, freshman Storm Rynard pitched one-hit ball over five innings. Rynard (2-1) allowed one run while striking out five and walking two. Sophomore Tyler Day followed with three scoreless innings of relief, and Ryan Jenkins finished the game by pitching a scoreless ninth.
Cowley trailed 1-0 before tying the game at 1-1 on Zach Mills' RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. The Tigers aggressiveness on the base paths led to two more runs in the top of the sixth.
Later, McBroom hit a run-scoring triple in the top of the eighth inning and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Matt Elliott as the Tigers went on to the 5-1 victory.
McBroom went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Mills went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Cowley added three more stolen bases in the nightcap and finished with 13 steals in the doubleheader.
Brett Norris took the loss on the mound for Highland as he allowed five hits and three runs in six innings.
The Tigers improve to 8-3 overall and 4-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Highland is now 5-7 overall and 0-4 in the Jayhawk East.
Cowley's doubleheader at Hutchinson on Tuesday has been postponed. The Tigers will return to action Thursday when they play at Allen Community College at 2 p.m. The Red Devils are 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
