HCC OUTFIELDER COX SIGNS IN EARLY PERIOD WITH NEBRASKA
The first member of the 2013 Hutchinson Community College baseball team has signed a letter of intent in the early-signing period.
Outfielder/pitcher Christian Cox has signed to play next season at the University of Nebraska. This marks the second-straight season that the Blue Dragons have had a player sign at Nebraska. Former Blue Dragon all-Jayhawk Conference catcher Tanner Lubach, an HCC teammate of Cox last season, is currently on the Cornhusker roster.
Cox is a 6-foot, 190-pound outfielder and left-handed pitcher from Aberdeen, S.D. He was an all-Jayhawk Conference Western Division honorable-mention player in 2012. Cox was the fifth-leading hitter on a Blue Dragon team that finished 40-17 and runner-up in the Chanute sub-regional.
Cox hit .317 and had a .456 on-base last season in 45 games, going 40 for 126 with nine doubles, a team-high six triples and a home run. Cox drove in 21 runs and scored 39. He stole 14 bases in 17 attempts. Defensively he had three errors in 83 defensive changes. Cox had a season-high four hits against Rose State.
As a pitcher, Cox made 10 appearances, making seven starts. He had a 3-1 record with a 3.67 earned-run average. Cox struck out 15 and walked seven, allowing 38 hits and 14 earned runs. Opponents hit .279 against the Blue Dragon left-hander.
Cox and the Blue Dragon baseball team will open the 2013 season on Feb. 16 at Rose State College in Midwest City, Okla. The Blue Dragons open at home on March 2 against Dodge City.
